EyeT4All Days

Supported by the National Lottery through the Big Lottery Fund

What is an EyeT4All day?

EyeT4All days are delivered in partnership with local voluntary societies for the blind and other agencies. For example, Library resource centres.  However, BCAB will deliver EyeT4All days to almost any group of visually impaired people who wish to find out about using a computer for the first time.

BCAB provide all of the computer equipment, connection to the internet and a trainer. All that an organization has to provide is the venue, the people and lunch. For more details on venue requirements, please email eyet4all@bcab.org.uk with your enquiry.

Low cost and intuitive access methods are presented in the belief that the benefits of information technology should not be restricted to those in work or studying. In order to provide further support, a year’s free membership of the British Computer Association of the Blind is offered to those attending the day.

What does an EyeT4All day cover?

For a visually impaired person to be able to use a computer, some form of "access technology" is needed. An access technology may enlarge the characters on the screen or translate them into speech. There are many access technology products on the market, with a wide range of features, costing as much as £850.

However, BCAB has assessed a range of access technologies, with an emphasis on ease of use and affordibility. Many organisations publish evaluations based on feature lists, but BCAB assessments are task based. Will the access technology enable people to do the things they want? Typical tasks include:

  • Communications through writing letters and email.
  • Getting and keeping personal information.
  • Shopping.
  • Reading.
  • Entertainment.
  • What’s on the web?

Arranging an EyeT4All day

If you are an individual and would like to attend an EyeT4All day, please contact your local society for the visually impaired and ask them to host an EyeT4All event. If you are a member of an organisation that has visually impaired members, suggest they contact BCAB to organise an EyeT4All day. EyeT4All days are intended to be attended by 10 to 12 visually impaired people.

If you represent a local society, club or organisation, and have at least 10 to 12 members expressing a committed interest in attending an EyeT4All day, please contact the EyeT4All Administrator, whose details can be found on the EyeT4All Project page. Single or multiple dates can be arranged as needed.
