Access Technology FAQ

Q. What is access technology?
A. Access technology, sometimes called assistive technology,  covers a wide range of devices and software applications that enable people with disabilities to carry out tasks independently.

Q. Are there access technologies available to help visually impaired people use a computer?
A. Yes, the most common are screen readers and screen magnifiers.

Q. What is a screen reader?
A. A screen reader is a software application that translates on screen content into electronic speech.

Q. What is a screen magnifier?
A. A screen magnifier is a software application that enlarges on screen content many times, making it easier to read.

Q. Will I need a special computer to use an access technology?
A. No, screen readers and screen magnifiers are available for standard Windows, Mac and Linux computers. You can buy these from any online or high street company.

Q. Which type of access technology would be best for me?
A. People with some useful sight tend to use a screen magnifier, whilst people with little or no sight tend to use a screen reader. There are no rules though, choose the option that's most comfortable for you.
 Q. How much does this kind of software cost?
A. Depending on your computer and your requirements, costs range from free to several hundred pounds.
