Get To Grips With... tutorials

The Get To Grips With... tutorials teach basic computer skills to blind and partially sighted people. There are four tutorials bundled on a single CD:

The Get To Grips With... tutorials are available for Jaws 11 (and higher). We are seeking funding to extend the range to include other popular screen readers, so please check back.

What will I learn?

The aim is to get you started using your computer, and carrying out the tasks most people want to do. You won't learn everything there is to know, but you will come away with a solid foundation that you can use to keep building your skills.

What's on the CD?

The CD contains the four Get To Grips With... tutorials, and a getting started guide. Each tutorial is broken down into lessons, and you can access each lesson in a choice of formats:

  • As documents, so you can read them in a word processor and make notes if you wish.
  • As web pages, so you can easily navigate from lesson to lesson.
  • As DAISY audio books, so you can listen to them in your book player.
  • As MP3 files, so you can listen from your MP3 player or computer.

When you put the CD into your computer you will be asked whether you'd like to listen to the audio, or copy the tutorials onto your computer. This screen will appear each time you put the CD into your computer, so it's an easy way to get started.

You can also put the CD in a normal CD player. When you do this you'll hear the MP3 version of the tutorials, but won't have access to the other formats unless you've copied them to your computer beforehand.

How much do the tutorials cost?

If you're a BCAB member you can buy the Get To Grips With... tutorials for just £25!

If you're not a BCAB member the cost is £60. However, you may like to purchase the set for £46.50 which includes a year's membership of BCAB as well!
